Immortal Vanguard - Build Mechanic

New Mechanic coming with Immortal Vanguard

Hey Duelyst fans! We have a new mechanic coming with the next expansion: Build.

Build is a keyword that will appear on minions followed by a number, for example - Build: (2)

Neutral Build Card

When you summon a minion with the Build keyword, it comes into play as a 0/10 Structure.

At the beginning of your turn, your minion's build counter decrements by one: this occurs every turn until the build counter reaches zero.

Once the build counter reaches zero, the Structure will transform into the minion you played from your action bar!

At this point, the minion is fully active and can begin to move and attack.

Learn more about Build

As you may have noticed, there are different colors for Build Structures.

In fact, every faction will sport its own unique color scheme for their Build minions!

But wait, there's still more to learn!

While a minion is "Building," you cannot dispel the fact that it is building and will transform at the end of its build countdown.

This means that you can treat buildings as regular Structures - you can target them with spells, heal them, damage them, transform them, destroy them, etc.

They will however eventually transform into their final form if not destroyed or removed (edit: this includes transform effects).

In the case that a Build structure is returned to the action bar, the owner will receive a copy of the original minion - not a 0/10 Structure. This means you can play your minion again and start the Build process from the beginning.

Any buffs that are applied to a Build minion while the card is in your action bar will apply to the final/transformed version after it is done Building.

And finally, a "Buildingis considered a token, so it is not a viable target for revive effects (you can, however, revive the final product).

Now that you've learned about how Build works, let's get ready for some Build spoilers coming out this week!

So essentially structure sentinels?

This. is. amazing. Seriously, Sentinels were a great idea and this is a great idea as well. Looking forward to seeing the actual minions.

Grapnel Paradigm and Zen’rui. That is all.

Does the build counter go down on the beginning of your turn and then the beginning of each players turn?
Or just your turn?

Our intention is to reveal the card of that building when the card is played, they won’t be secretive like Sentinels

To answer this, I’ll reference the article

It surely is an interesting effect, which may emphasize the board game aspect of Duelyst - think about placing your minions around the structure to defend it against the opponent’s threats, much like a siege in strategy games.

It’s too early to assess how powerful the mechanic will be, but I like it and it seems something which may be expanded in the future. I’m really curious now!

Will it be possible to see the intended minion by hovering over the structure while it’s building? Or will this information only visible when it is played?

I really hope I don’t have to memorize the minion every time it’s played especially if there’s more than one on the field.

. . . I should just get Ragnora now

Cool mechanic, but greatly increases the value of cards that are already strong, such as Makantor and Lavaslasher. Not to mention it can get get stolen by Vet or removed with Punish or Aspect of Shimzar, meaning you lose a ton of tempo.

But I suppose it depends on the mana cost, minion summoned and structure health. Anything that’s a buff to already broken Magmar cards starts out with a sour taste in my mouth, but we’ll see.

I was actually pretty worried they would be like sentinels. I’m relieved to hear that these won’t be the same.

I wonder why the generic “Building” tokens are 9 mana. Because doesn’t this allow an early Kraigon or something in Magmar due to Cascading Rebirth?

I dunno, I’m not even sure which factions will get “Build” minions.

well the Abyssian(?) one seems to cost 9?

Abyssian structure

All Buildings should cost 9 mana “on the field” - the minion you play to summon said Building may cost differently. It’s a small protection against certain cards such as Cascading Rebirth that @mrmana3 pointed out :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s the Abyssian one @divinedevek (the one you linked is the Neutral building)

Speaking of Abyssian and mana...

EchoingShriek

(Because they’re all 9 mana)
Just another defense against the Dark Arts

Still, Natural Selection and Plasma Storm wreck this, so I suspect something more is cooking to better protect these structures, am I right?

And Makantor and Lavaslasher. Magmar’s gonna be too good for these to be meta unless something changes

So basically havencraft amulets?

The only way these will be even slightly viable is if
1 - they are overpowered in stats and effects that even leaving one alive is certain death
2 - there are ways to speed up the build instantly
3 - they are so cheap that you can spam out like 5 of them alongside your normal minions without losing tempo

Personally im looking forward to
Deathwatch: decrease a friendly build counter by 1

The concept sounds really interesting, although the minions are probably going to be stupidly OP’ed if we are supposed to wait several turns before they can even do anything.

Sadly, Natural selection and plasma storm will probably make sure nobody plays these .

Sounds good.

Fun, too.
