Disclaimer

This is a MAGMAR thread, It is biased towards Magmar issues. This thread isn’t about the overall health of game but the overall health of one faction. Some of the views will lean towards complaining about the faction that you might view in good health or strong if you can’t communicate constructively in here take those feelings please go elsewhere. Seriously go start your own thread

Explanation of the Rating Scale

  1. Never use this card

  2. This card is a Meme. You can play it and have fun but using serious competitive play will be a hindrance to your deck at times

  3. You can put this card in your deck on occasion with synergy it will do something great but on most times you can play something that can do better

  4. These cards can be played in competitive play and will be good a lot of times

  5. Meta defining card and when you play this card it generally increases your chance to win

Krater -

When the card was shown there was a lot of talk being Skorn 2.0 and in most factions, in Duelyst that means it would see play as clear early counter to swarm but in Magmar. It is competing with Ragebinder on the most versatile 3 drops in the game and fact the Magmar has Rebuke/Plasma Storm/Mankantor which is pretty good counter to swarm. If Hyper Swarm becomes a force then a quicker answer like Krater might become necessary but more than likely this card only see use in Amplification and Twin Fangs deck which have been solid but not spectacular in the past. Because of the previous mention Amplification, this card might see play as people believe that is one of the keys to using Hatefurance as it is one of the best targets for Amp.

Rating 3/5

This card will see fringe competitive play

Mortar-Maw

Ranged is one of the strongest keywords in all of Duelyst.Stats on these minions are carefully applied so that they don’t run out of control.Mortar is no different and while it has one strongest keyword and secondary ability to boot its stats greatly limit namely its 4 health makes so it has a low chance of surviving when it on board.

Rating 3/5 This card will see fringe competitive play

Angered Okkadok

This is a pretty straightforward almost boring minion. The first time is played 2/3, Second time 3/4 and Third time 4/5. All these stats line are the competitive numbers in duelyst.3/4 is the ideal for 3 mana minion and 4/5 is ideal for a 4 mana minion. So anytime this minion is played after you get minion with ideal stats for higher mana cost for only 2 mana. With the card Mirrorimum, you can have this extremely hopefully gameplan of growing cards because a 2 mana 5/6, 6/7, 7/8 start to get pretty silly.

4/5 This card will see competitive play

image

Hatefurnace

Arguably the most talk about card of trials of Mythron set.And it is one of the most divisive cards in the set. At first glance, this card looks amazingly strong with rush being arguably the strongest keyword in the game and this card gives every card the ability to that but as you look closer you start to see the cracks.Deck construction this deck has to carry almost 9 spells and 9 early game minions which limits the big play ability of this deck. The release of more cards has shown that Hatefurance deck will have OTKO potential World Core Golem.

5/5 This card will see competitive play and will have an impact

image

Gargantuan Growth

This is a bad card. The set up to make this card usable is not worth it.Maybe I am proved wrong and the new grow minion makes this card usable but I doubt it.

1/5 Avoid this card

image

Beastclad Hunter

This card is the definition of solid.Nothing too fancy to talk about put a buff on it forces your opponent to use hard removal on it. It is great board control tool and the style of minion they should pushing in Magmar in my opinion. You can make an argument for this card being lower like a 3/5 but in my opinion is not because this card is bad but because the next card coming up is a monster.

4/5 This card will see competitive play

image

Haruspex

They skip the 4 mana 7/7 joke by giving it one less health and everyone knows this card is no joke. This card changes how you build decks and approach Magmar. Haruspex makes you

1.Carry something capable removing a 2 drop deny Magmar from getting the tile
2.Make sure keep Soft/hard removal in your hand to remove the card.

Please understand that is metagame now not building a deck that can do these things will lead to you losing because if you let Haruspex be played and you can’t answer or deny you have to back off allowing Magmar to get mana tiles and develop more strong minions that need to be answered. And you just lose the game

5/5 This card will see competitive play and will have an impact

image

Bellow

This is a pretty good spell it is no thumping wave but it is much healthier design than thumping wave.It is buff and stun which makes it versatile and you will find a place to use it in many games. This looks like the third buff that is going to in Hatefurance decks to make that deck work.

4/5 This card will see competitive play

image

Deep Impact

If I am reading this correctly this spells pings a minion and reduces it is health to one. Basically, It is a equality from Heartstone that targets one minion and that is pretty good I think. It has a low enough cost to enable it to be a combo with Krater, Spirit harvester and Quilbeast plus some other pings in the game.

4/5 This card will see competitive play

image

image

Extinction Event

Quite honestly this card should be a meme but the answer to multiple eggs on the board is to often drop an Emp. This card has a solid play in Ragnora and interesting set up with Chrysalis Burst or Progenitor. So it could see some fringe competitive play but more than likely it is a meme.

Rating 3/5 This card will see fringe competitive play

Invigoration

For me how useful this card will come down to how well it can be multiplied in Magmar. If you can get extra one or two is amazing. 3,6,9 is decent but healing for 12 or 15 for two mana and playing something could be back-breaking.This card could replace earth sphere in some decks.

Rating 3/5 This card will see fringe competitive play

image

Mitotic Induction

You can Flash Reincarnation out a World Core golem on 7. You put answer or die pressure on them but on the next turn .You use Mitotic Induction and egg morph game over. That is the fringe case but I think that showcase the power of the card. You have a nifty combo at 6 mana that can do some cool stuff.I think it will probably end being a meme because a competitive deck doesn’t have the space to carry a tech card like that and they will be stuff more useful.

Rating 3/5 This card will see fringe competitive play

image

Oropsisaur

I could give some big long explanation why this card is good but simplest explanation. If this card is dispelled it is a 3 mana 2/5 which is decent stats and that is what grow cards need to be successful.A usable body if something goes wrong.

4/5 This card will see competitive play

image

Zoetic Charm

We have been asking for something to protect eggs since they were introduced now we got a card that does that.It makes every rebirth minion at least 3 hits which means. If I have this equip and flash out my Silthar Elder. It is going to stick even if someone has Blood of Air and that makes me happy

4/5 This card will see competitive play

Overall I am very happy with cards shown in this expansion they are many build blocks for different styles of deck to be made with Magmar. The devs who designs Magmar cards continues to do the Lord’s work designing these cards and continues showing that they have understanding of how to make competitive cards. It might annoy people who play other factions but it is a joy to get expansions and know your cards will work.Prophecy was a miss but Vanguard was good And ToM looks to be very good good as well. Now for the questions

Questions

1.What has been your favorite Magmar card of the release cards?

2.What neutrals do you think will be must add in Magmar decks?

3.Where do think Magmar’s place will be in meta after the expansion is released?

Discuss any Magmar related stuff in here.

Second disclaimer- They are a million post, threads, topics complaining about Magmar use one of those if you want just whine about Magmar. Constructive criticism is welcomed here though.

Thank you for the reviews and overview! Very scary to see Magmar get two true OTK paths with the new Golem. Not only because that’s terrifying, but also because it means that no other faction is likely to compete with those Magmar decks into the late game. Good luck with your Variax grind, know what I mean? For the Hatefurnace variant, what kind of build are we looking at?

Meme-wise, Extinction event wins in all categories. Actual power wise it is a split between Angered Okkadok, Oropsisaur and Zootic Charm, all for various reasons.

I think Sellsoul and Marauder will be great for the trial deck, as well as the occasional Worldcore golem meme. As for eggnora, it may run emp to setup Exctinction, as well as Mirrorrim seems a great addition to Twin fang Magmar. The new 7 mana 7/7 neutral legendary might see play in Millhorn.

I believe Magmar still stay at the top hopefully to be overthrown by our Abyssian overlords, due to the power of their cards. It is still early to speculate because not every interaction is known, but magmar should never be tier 3 this expansion atleast

Doesn’t Intensify only increase the numeric values by 1? So it’s 2,3,4,…?

Dear god posts like these make we want to cut my eyes out. People just assuming they know exactly how everything is gonna turn out without even playing the cards.

Sorry, not trying to insult you personally, I just have a distaste for these pre-expansion reviews.

https://forums.duelyst.com/t/upcoming-mechanic-intensify/13436?u=phoenixtoasches

It is dependent on the numeric value of the card itself. If the initial value was, for example, to be +2 attack to a minion then the next time the card is casted the next targeted minion would receive a +4 attack buff and then the third time the card is casted it would be a +6 attack buff.

In that example I was using the songhai minion Coalfist, but hopefully you can find some application with it in your case.

Also, @kirabi, I know we don’t see eye to eye on many occasions, but nevertheless I enjoyed your review.

No, the value rises by the original amount. So if the starting number is three it goes up by three each time.

Instant edit: Yay, useless post. Sorry, I’m tired.

No insult taken in fact you are right we don’t know what is going to be good. This is just fun speculation on my part and I expect to wrong on stuff. I am not approaching as I am the all seeing master with untouchable predictions and anyone who challenges my opinion is wrong. I was actually a little uncomfortable doing this because they are couple of cards I am pretty sure I am going to end being wrong on.This is just good food for debate mostly and lot times in talking about new cards you learn the extoic combos and interactions

Brief consideration as a Magmar main.

Magmar got a very solid set of cards, which will further augment the hate some players have towards the faction. I would have preferred to see weaker cards with more interesting synergies, which would have put Magmar more in line with the other factions.

I suspect we will see mostly Magmar and Vetruvian when the expansion hits. A few of the cards they are not playing would (almost) be autoincludes in other factions…

Hey m8, it’s a well written review made for fun. Nobody expects our predictions to be 100% accurate, but what should we do waiting for expansion to launch? Talking about possible plays and synergies makes us more prepared to actually testing stuff, and is also fun.

Cheers.

Yep, I think I will take a break from Magmar for a while and try to take Cassyva again where she deserves

I won’t even ask what in your opinion Cassiva deserves

On topic though. Krater + Oropsisaur synergy may be a bit over the top. Twin fangs give attack to general. Dino gives attack to everyone. Scary.

As much as i love cassy i think this xpac doesnt gave enought stuff to her. The only abyss deck that i think it maybe good is a dying wish deck with the lurking fear guy and nether summoning. I agree with your statement, vetruvian and magmar stays on the top.
Back on topic i think that haruspex and beastclad hunter are amazing 4 drops, its a shame that they will fight for the same spot. Cant wait to see if hatefurnace will be meta or not.
I really like zoetic charm, ragnora will love this card

Magmar first impressions

  • Burnhorn is very good, It feels consistent

  • Trial Magmar is turning out worse than predicted namely because of draw, You have put spells, small minions, and draw if you want to get out trial consistently. Which eats spots for good minions it looks far more balanced than the community thought

  • After trying Vaath and Starhorn I think that body that Ragnora put down and alt win con of ripper will probably be the key making Hatemar work.

Has anyone tried Sarlac in Hatemar yet? The rush + undying is a potentially infinite combo (how lucky do you feel?), and he could stick around for buffs.

P.s. Hatemar is a great name for a deck.

Played one game with Decimus Q’horn (original decks came from here but I made my own version to suit me Card Discussion 1-3-2018 Q’orrhlma’a) and the deck is still good. My version of the deck only lost 1 minion with the rotation so finding a replacement wasn’t hard at all.

Haven’t played with any other Magmar toys yet. Been mainly playing Songhai mainly because that is what the orbs gods wanted. Think in my 6/7 games I played in the expansion, I haven’t seen any Magmar opponents, its pretty much all been Songhai.

I put Sarlac in couple decks for that reason.I haven’t play enough games to have a real impression on it.

Yeah, it really sucks how it has anti-synergy with Natrual selection. Then again, deep impact is a juicy card…

Doesnt hate furnace activate only from cards Played?
