Worth migrating to Duelyst?

Hi everyone. I’ve been a Hearthstone player since the game was in beta, but I’m considering coming over to Duelyst because of how expensive the game has gotten. I played a little Duelyst a few months ago, and I absolutely love the artwork. The game also seems to be much less driven by RNG than Hearthstone is.

Has anyone else here played Hearthstone, and enjoyed Duelyst more/less? Have the classes historically been balanced/imbalanced? And if I were to make the switch, how would you recommend getting started? Is there a specific set I should start buying orbs from?

Thanks in advance.

Just look at the top 10 topics here in the forum and you know what’s going on right now in terms of “balance”. And it’s been like this more or less every expansion, this time it’s worse than usual but still.

I’ve played both Hearthstone and Duelyst since beta. Personally, I prefer Duelyst because its not as easy for people to net deck and win even with a meta deck compared to Hearthstone. While there is also a level of skill that can take you up with the ranked ladder even without expensive decks or cards. Generally, Bronze (ranks 30-21) and Silver (20-11) have no real meta, Gold (10-6) you see more meta decks, Diamond (5-1) is where the meta decks hit the hardest and S-rank is where people tend to chill out more.

Do the challenges in the play menu for some free gold and learn some basic things. You can level factions up to level 10 against the practise AI to help you unlock all the basic cards and you get a free orb at lvl 10 I believe and you get the second general for each faction at lvl 11 and the third general after 10 wins in ranked with that faction. Other than that read the forums or ask questions on discord to expand your game knowledge with other players.

Depends which faction and what kind of deck you want, but usually you can’t go wrong with Core Set orbs at least.

Usually not so imbalanced that you can’t climb with a faction that isn’t a top tier meta deck. If you got the time, skill and patience. As for the current meta it still needs some time, its only been 3 weeks or so since the latest expansion.

Like we say to all newbies(and somehow isbee hasnt finished the faq)
get core orbs
Craft what you need from expansions
Lyonar is the go to faction to start out with (its super budget friendly)
But you should play all factions at least till level 11

And last but i wish it was least, balance is super fluid and metas usually last about a month or 2 before something gets nerfed or a new expansion

This months meta is MAGMAR
More specifically its a “why wont magmar let me have nice things” meta

Hearthstone is definitely better from a presentation standpoint. The music and ambiance make me feel warm inside. This leads me to feel like Duelyst takes itself too seriously sometimes. I just wish it was just a bit more whimsical, especially around the holidays. As far as rng goes, you’re 100% correct. this leads to “tide turning” happening much less often. I love Duelyst for it’s beautiful pixel art, amazing combos and power-plays, and diversity. The meta is broken (except for a few exceptions) much more often in Duelyst than Hearthstone. Also the rng that counts, i.e. opening packs, is much more forgiving in Duelyst. But, as all objective things are, you should draw your own pros and cons and act accordingly. You can add me my ign is thekata

The other replies mention most of it. Tbh the balance right now is a little out of whack but that’s really only in Diamond and S-Rank with a little bit on Gold. Given a couple weeks there will most likely be a patch to right things as Magmar is undoubtedly topdog.

Besides the usual post-expac struggle everything is very balanced. Every faction is viable. I’d recommend trying out every faction until you find one you really connect with. Many will tell you to dust everything outside of your chosen faction but I don’t agree as I personally find that very boring.

Buy Core Orbs for now as most of the cards you get will be useful and of a good quality for many deck types. I wouldn’t craft any Denizens of Shimzar stuff unless it’s cheap as they will be rotated out sometime early next year.

After you’ve started getting a feel for the different factions you might want to focus towards building up a good deck for each faction one by one, and there are plenty of great budget options available. Feel free to ask for advice or help on the forums and people will gladly supply it.

Buy from core you will get the most return value in spirit. craft what you want from other sets

I play both Hearthstone and Duelyst, I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive. I think Hearthstone feels a bit more casual, and Duelyst has a lot more room for strategy, making your personal skill matter a lot more than just having a good deck alone.

Duelyst is much more balanced than Hearthstone, which is constantly wracked with broken interactions and situations where you simply don’t have any power, no matter how good you are as a player. It’s all about the deck you run. The balance is a little off right now, just like any post-expansion, but it’s still being blown a little out of proportion.

Naturally there will always be top decks, and you will need to tech against them if you want to climb in the higher ranks, just like any game. But I’m happy to say that Duelyst supports a huge variance of deck types, and you can get to gold with any of them if you are good as a player.

As far as packs go, stick with core starting out. The monthly rewards for ranked are very generous, and the drop rate for cards of higher rarity are the most in your favor than any game I’ve ever played. Getting a pack that has 1 rare and 4 commons is the outlier, not the norm. Also you are rewarded more for playing more games in Duelyst, because you get 3 daily quests a day, as well as a win-of-the-day bonus. You earn at least a pack a day just from completing the daily quests. This, combined with the forgiving drop rate, makes collecting feel way better in Duelyst compared to other games like Hearthstone,

End of the day, game’s a lot of fun, I’d stick with it

Duelyst gives you also a lot more Gold and spirit compared to Hearthstone. Three wins are 15 gold instead of 10 and you get quests worth 90 gold each day (first win, faction, factionindependant) with at least 2 wins a day you can get enough for an Orb each day!

Besides the higher Legendary drop chances you also get more spirit in average than in Hearthstone. First you get a common card free each day, then you get more orbs in average. To top things off disenchanting commons will give you 10 spirit instead of 5. This means even a “bad” orb will give you 80 spirit compared to 40 dust in HS. You can craft nearly a rare card from that compared to a common.
So yes, it feels better, it is worth it imo.

I play HS sometimes on my phone when I am on the way to work. But because of how quests work here I do that one time in three days.

I’m sure this has all been said but-

.generous rewards for new/f2p players. there are a lot of cards with 3x of each but you can get a decent collection if you focus on a faction or two at first.
.pretty good drop rates, better than other card games ime.
.playing/moving/attacking etc with your nerds is way cool.
.lots of powerful removal (whether or not that’s good is up to you).
.great aesthetic.
.it’s nothing like Hearthstone. Yes you pick a general to play and yes the have defining spells (hero power) and yes- it is a card game but a Hearthstone comparison is nonsense.
.lots of diversity and good balance, much better than is often given credit- yes there is toxic shit but it’s a game so it can’t really be helped.
.TONS of lore, if you’re into that sort of thing.

i played mtg for a long time (but that was like 20yrs ago) I’ve played 100’s (must be 5-700) hours of Hearthstone and I’ve tried pretty much every DCCG I can find and this is BY FAR my favorite. I play a lot and do spend money and it’s 100% worth it. The players are active and even at off hours (I play mostly at 3-5am est) queues are usually max 30sec or so. get in to this.

For better answers : what do you expect to find in Duelyst that you don’t have in Hearthstone ?
(beside new colorful cards :stuck_out_tongue: )

And what are you fed up with in Hearthstone you really hope not to find in Duelyst ?

You’d be surprised at how many people switched to Duelyst after Hearthstone

Tons of Duelyst players are from Hearthstone. The balance is in the good place right now and the board gives the game a whole extra level of strategy.

I’m a former hearthstone player.
Ever since I found Duelyst, I’ll never go back to hearthstone.
Duelyst is my FAVORITE game!
So much more fun & strategic.
Def, hang out here.

I’m myself a fan of chess, and the swap to Duelyst enabled me to put those skills to use far better than I ever could in Hearthstone.
Plus, I began to detest the RNG in that game.

Don’t get me wrong; fun game to watch is HS, but that’s as far as it goes for me; watching.

Haven’t gone back since switching to Duelyst, aside from watching from favourite streamers.

Depends on which faction you like playing the most

I think core orbs are pretty much the general place you start for card gathering, no?

Core has a good amount of key cards and is a solid foundation of your collection, go for core

And depending on which faction you wish to main, you can craft the important cards from other packs (usually).
