Word-to-Card Contest (September 2019)

Welcome, won and awl, to the twelfth monthly Word-to-Card Contest!

Choose a word and use your superior creativity to lay waste to your enemies:

  • FAMILY (chosen by uukasz)
  • SELF-RESTRAINT
  • RELENTLESS

:crossed_swords: BONUS CHALLENGE :crossed_swords:

TRIAL: Your card also incorporates one of the underused keywords Invulnerable or Ephemeral, or utilizes the Summon Dervish or Wall keyword in a unique way (i.e. not on a Wall or Obelysk).

DESTINY: If your card is tied with other designs when the voting stage ends, your card gets an extra entry into the discobot tiebreaker.

Rules
  • Design a card that relates to the word of the month that you choose in any way
  • You may only submit one card
  • Submit your card in one of the two acceptable formats
  • If using the visual format and you choose art from a different faction than what you want your card to be, make sure to specify your card’s faction
  • Don’t copy cards other people have posted or cards from other card games
  • When voting for a card, do not choose your own design

Submission Format

Make a card on this website and upload it here (recommended), or (if you are planning on changing your card often before the deadline) use this format:

Name (Cost)
Faction Type [Attack/Health] (Rarity)
Abilities

Example:

Praise the Sun! (5)
Lyonar Spell (Legendary)
If this is the third time you praised the sun this game, restore your General to full health.

OR (this way looks way better)

Prizes

1st place: 5 Core Orbs, get to decide one of next month’s words

2nd place: 4 Core Orbs

3rd place: 3 Core Orbs

Important Dates

September 15 – Submissions close, community voting begins

September 22 – Community voting ends, winners are honored and sent their prizes

GLHF! :sirpenti:

P.S. There’s now an official rule about not voting for your own design, so I shouldn’t have to keep repeating myself about that.

Excellent keyword combo this month. :+1:

Is this for Self-Restraint? Also, where did you find that cool picture?

It’s family, self-restraint and relentless… If you stretch definitions a bit.
I’m thinking it’s on the weak side for 3 mana and could be +2 attack though.
Picture is homemade from random googling material.

I don’t see Relentless at all, I can see Family, and as for Self-Restraint… who would choose to put themselves in the stocks?

I disagree. If you buff this thing or even instantly sacrifice it after getting an attack out with your General, it’s really good value.

Wow! Does that mean you Googled pixelart and put it together somehow, or you Googled pictures of people in the stocks and made that pixelart from scratch?

The latter. A goofy stock picture turned into pixel art.

By the popular demand of three people (and myself), the Destiny for the Bonus Challenge has been toned down. Now, completing the challenge can not be considered even remotely necessary, as it only increases your chances to win if you get in a tie. But I think it’s still a nice bonus for people who want an extra challenge. Do you agree?

  • Yes
  • No
  • I’ll just pick the funny option that is extremely unhelpful to the OP, who is trying to get honest feedback

FAMILY

I think I got it all. As long as the mother lives there will be eggs that make the dads invulnerable and therefore less agressive towards the offspring. The eggs can be destroyed by other means… which gives the father hopefully enough time to get out of the death by snoo snoo embrace…

But do you really want to sunder those family’s bonds???:sob:

SELF-RESTRAINT

Invulnerable is a tough keyword. Good cards (like yours) become OP, bad cards become annoying b*tches.

Oh, no wonder it was OP. I forgot that Walls could still attack. This current version is what I wanted it to be. It’s comparable to Saberspine Alpha, and I think it’s relatively balanced now.

Considering the owner controls the on/off switch of Invulnerable, that is a first smell of potential abuse.
The way it’s currently worded I’m going to have an ecstatic day dumping buffs on this every turn and being sure no removal can ever hit it back.
That is pretty new for Duelyst at this point, but beyond the 7-mana mark I admit I know nothing about balance.

Can you even buff an invulnerable minion though? Only board based effects should be able to change a thing on this one… something like Shiro might be able to buff it.

I’m pretty sure Invulnerable prevents anything and everything including buffs & debuffs, heals, damage, displacing and attacking.

But you’d have to have enough cards to completely expend your mana every single turn. Is that a common occurrence in Vanar?

I have no idea, but you would have to buff it before it turns Invulnerable anyway.

Maybe making it a 4/4 would make it more fair?

Just a matter of having the good mana curve in your deck? Have a Hideatsu-style mana curve with the freedom of sprinkling Vanar’s excellent buff cards along.
But anyway: about the actual power level of your card, I’m just a bad player and can’t evaluate that. I’m just saying that having the opportunity to flick Invulnerability on or off on your own unit is new.

Which is sort of the point of these contests I suppose

With only 5 entries, this will be a pretty epic vote in 9 days…
