Pardon me if I’m reading too far here, but that seemed a tad harsh.
He isn’t a native English speaker after all.
He’s not wrong that it can technically point to the dead Minion; only thing stopping us from thinking that is what we know already about the game; you can’t deactivate a dead Minion. Still room for confusion though.
Trials Of Mythron Spoiler - Resonance Scythe (Vanar)
Sorry if I sounded rude; I now can figure how you can be confused. The text is indeed grammatically incorrect, as both “your General” and “a Stunned enemy” are singular nouns, but the modifier uses the pronoun “them.” I suppose CPG worded it like that to avoid using gender-specific pronouns like him and her.
More likely to avoid referencing ‘Your General’ twice, closely.
I know it isn’t fair to non-native speakers (made that point in my first post) but this is really beating a dead horse on the terms of… terms?
Even if the card was to reactivate enemy minions, it would probably read
“Whenever a Stunned enemy is destroyed by your General, reactivate them” because the primary focus of the sentence is now shifted on the first noun rather than the supporting one (which again, not worded greatly) but becomes more of a common English problem than a translation issue at which point the card should clarify that it reanimates said minion somewhere on the card (and round and round we go~)
It’s being nit-picky for the sake of nit-picky, or looking for a deeper meaning where there is none (we aren’t dissecting a poem here)
shrug
Discussion is discussion.
Won’t catch me dead attempting to dissuade someone asking for clarification, no matter how simple.
Besides, discussing a card’s text does no one any harm. We have had a spout of bad card text from Duelyst over the days after all; hard to expect it to just disappear.
It seems like you’ve had a bad day. If that’s the case, hopefully tomorrow is better. That being said, my initial impression of the card was that it summoned the minion back for me and gave it rush. The text for it isn’t as clear as I would hope
Every. Duelyst. Card. Ever.
I beg to differ!
The attack increases,
The General looms.
Ah! Thus comes a foe,
With a single blow, he goes.
For the General to take another soul.
~ Resonance Scythe
Well the grammar used on this card is simply a fail, “your general”…“reactivate them”. You cannot fault people for questioning the wording.
Trying to be gender neutral is all good, but not at the cost of established grammar.
That’s all fine and good, I’m just shocked to see this come up now when it should have been addressed seeing how something like Mind Lathe already exists.
Wish I had more judicial power over the way cards are printed my dude. Spoiler season is always a cauldron of chaos over explaining what’s written on the card, what’s painstakingly explained ad nauseum in an article, or having to pre-emptively jump into a thread to explain what isn’t explained.
My apologize @project2el if I came off harsh. It’s not always clear who’s trying to troll or who genuinely doesn’t know and need an explanation.
Roses are red,
Grass is green,
Lets leave that discoverable,
Shall we team?
I’m failing to see the Mind lathe obscurity as that card is actually very clear in what it does or am I missing something here?
As this card is to ‘Them’, Mindlathe is to ‘It’.
High-fantasy card descriptions + biblical-sized oracle text would actually be a neat way to weave some lore into the cards :3
I actually do admire the wonderful compendium that is MTG’s “Gatherer.” Being able to detail all the weird niche interactions and/or rulings under one search bar is a great asset.
(Quick Edit)
Anyone who misinterprets Resonance Scythe’s ability as a form of reanimation has equal grounds to contend that Mind Lathe could reanimate their target minion as well:
- If you killed it, what’s not to say you can’t reanimate, reactivate and take control of it until the end of your turn?
- If you killed a Stunned enemy, what’s not to say you reanimated & reactivate it?
Because Mind Lathe makes no clarification that you need the minion alive to take control of it, while Resonance Scythe does but makes no mention that “it” is the same minion, etc
If this is released as posted the failed grammar annoyance would be supreme every time the card shows up.
Should be rewritten as: “Whenever this artifact destroys a Stunned enemy, reactivate your General.”
At least with just Shroud you can start to do some swarm cleaning
P sure you can’t reactive something that’s dead, and lathe specifically mentions the ordering of reactivation and then taking control, other way around and i’d be with you but idk, to me it doesnt wash.
Edit: and fyi, i didnt even bring up the reanimation bit, simply that you lot suck at grammar and have for some time now.
And that’s the “logic” that I was hoping would apply to Resonance Scythe but… you know. Wording.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As we can see from the many non-intuitive cards that have been printed in the past, present, and presumable future… English is hard.
so you didn’t answer my question
hard day today?
If you’re willing to allow people to provide more clear effects when they’re released and then change the text to match them, I’m sure the many grammar nazis here are willing to help.
