Safe space for noobs/strict matchmaking/hidden mmr

Yo ive lost count of the times ive faced against starter decks in unranked.

I mean sure unranked is great for people who have been playing for a while… but i can only imagine what noobs are going through. Damned with tryhards in ranked, damned with getting pitted against people with proper card collections if they dont.

So yeah tile some possible ways to turn things around:
Hidden mmr. Now if my guess is right it actually does have one but its a simple:its just a separate ranked ladder but eith invisible stats. A way to fix this is to make ranked games affect the hidden mmr. That way a guy like me who frequents ranked wont meet basic deckers.

Strict matchmaking. Exactly what it is. Idk how matchmaking works tho so ifk if this one is even feasible.

Safe space for noobs. Noobs enter special unranked Queue only for people who have opened around 100-300 orbs. They can opt in or opt out of this option.

noobs have bronze and silver, hidden mmr defeats the purpose of the unranked mode by having just 2 ranked queues.

I guess he’s suggesting that the current system is not working. Matching noobs against veteran players is bad for both sides

I have noticed a lot of starter cards in unranked lately (though that one person who played a swamp entangler is obviously no noob) and when I checked the replay it shows what division of the ladder they’re in.

Then again if they wanted to not play against “high level players” then they would’ve stuck to ladder where they’d have a better chance of being matched up against similarly experienced foes

but it allows noobs to play without stress, I would say just matching similarly ranked players from ranked mode, but not earning rank in unranked mode.

Problem is that any system wouldn’t really work for new players. The chances are, if new players are doing unranked, its most likely to be for quests without affecting their rank. As some people will funnel resources into a particular deck or faction before branching out into others. So it allows them to use factions or other decks to gain gold without the risk of going down in ranked.

Hidden mmr wouldn’t work because some people may tank their mmr on purpose to play against new players, or end up playing against new players because they concede too often against boring meta decks. Don’t know how many people would do that, but my experience from other games does say that there people out there who would do it on purpose. In LoL there are people who tank their placement matches to purposefully start in Bronze and climb upwards from there, even though they might be a diamond or higher calibre player, for example.

We have people complain or mention about being put against people from other divisions in ranked. I doubt the player base is large enough to be able to do strict matchmaking in unranked without severely impacting the matchmaking time.

Problem would be the same as strict matchmaking.

If we want to give new players a safer space to play against other new players then the most obvious thing might be to extend the Bronze ranks. Since you can’t lose chevrons in Bronze, so increasing the Bronze ranks would allow new players to have an extended journey to Silver without the fear of losing ranks or having to play more experienced players in unranked. But that could also lead to other problems as well.

What stress? it is unranked it doesn’t matter if you lose. It was this same bs complaint that got original unranked mode taken out and we were without a unranked mode for a year plus time.

or just have players lose chevrons for losing games in bronze. being able to climb consistently might offer some initial positive reinforcement to new players but if that results in them reaching silver in their first couple days and suddenly half their opponents have full meta decks while they’re still trying to learn the game mechanics i would imagine that’s responsible for a lot of players abandoning the game.

It could work both ways. Where people lose chevrons in Bronze, get unmotivated to play the game because they already losing at the lowest possibly tier and feel like their can’t climb, without spending money which they don’t want to do in a game they not invested in. Which leads to them abandoning the game.

Lack of information could also contribute to this. Unlike HS, Duelyst has a smaller player base and also a smaller amount of information out there for people to learn from. We (as in forum users) know things like tier lists, forums, discord, reddit, certain card interactions etc, exists. But new players may not know or can only find outdated information which may not be helpful. Which does happen as we do get a new person on the forums every now and then, only finding outdated information on something they want to know prior to coming here.

The old unranked was taken out because some players figured out that match making was determined by deck cost. So, a few more skilled players just ran cheap but decks and crushed all the new players systematically.

Now, was that the right move? Probably not. I would have just made it a complete free-for-all over that or removing it entirely, but unranked was certainly not taken down because newer players were occasionally matched with and loose to more skilled ones; it was because a group of more skilled players figured out how to exploit the matchmaking, to the disadvantage of newer players.

I think our opinions of what happened is different and I am not going to waste time arguing over small details about the past. The Simple point was they were complaints about new players matching up with old players with better decks.Cpg took down unranked to balance it and didn’t come back until frostfire came back.

Now once again player(s) are complaining about a mode where nothing happens if you lose. And talking things that will increase queue times in a game with small population.Anyways I live through this before a player wants to match with someone a similar rank should play standard. New player who wants to test stuff in environment where wins and loss doesn’t mean anything play unlimited. Can they do something to maybe match up players better unlimited ? Yes Is worth slow down queue times ? no. All I know is we sat for a year without being able to quest and test decks in unranked mode and it began with similar complaints. In a perfect world duelyst is suppose to have

Standard ranked
Unlimited ranked

Gauntlet
Rifts

Unranked mode
Sandbox mode

I will leave it at that

In a perfect world only rift mode exists and anybody who doesn’t like it can say hello to my flash fox.

I have seen more than one person play Unlimited while being in Bronze which doesn’t make any sense.
Advantages of Unlimited are you can use all cards (which is not of relevance for new players) and you don’t lose anything on losing a game (which is the same in Bronze).
Disadvantages: You play more experienced players in Unlimited than in Bronze.

That’s the reason I would lock Unlimited till Silver (similar to how Gauntlet is locked) to prevent new players getting frustrated by the decks they face in Unlimited.

Sorry, I think i wasn’t clear with how strict matchmaking is viable despite having a small playerbase.

this is what i had in mind. it’s a checkbox. if someone deems queue for strict matchmaking is going to take too long, it’s just a checkbox away from getting fixed. and subsequently,if one deems the a fair match is worth the wait, it’s also just a check away. when making queue time vs fair match tradeoffs, i honestly don’t think any 1 decision will make the majority happy. so why not have 2 options?

their playerbase is practically as niche and small as ours so if they can have strict matchmaking, why can’t we?

ps:

it’s not really about the stakes, it’s about having nice non-lopsided games. It’d be nice if noobs got a good time instead of conceding on turn 4 and boring themselves.

is that an hour long que???

oh yeah. Battlerite got this dumbass thing where it doesn’t know if you got disconnected from the server. so if you don’t restart the queue after reconnecting to the internet, you get queue times like that, and it’ll never… ever … match you. I probably should have picked a different image.

Is that taya?
