Revert Sphere of Darkness to 1 mana

A few days ago i started a discussion on reddit about SoD being nerfed too hard, the thread didn’t exactly explode but the vast majority of replies all agreed that the nerfs were over the top.

It’s perfectly understandable that it was changed to prevent a combo with Abyssal Tormentor but the fact that it can only target minions cuts its usefulness way down.

  1. You can no longer ping generals for 1 dmg
  2. You can no longer damage artifacts
  3. You can no longer deny mana tiles
  4. You can no longer counter opposing tile effects like exhuming sand
  5. You can no longer use it to simply generate creep and cycle the card

With all these uses being removed the increased cost is completely unnecessary, especially if you compare it with Gotatsu which has an almost identical function. Another solution to this would be to just allow it to target empty tiles again.

All i can say is - creep outside of rotation got tons of support so to open up spave for new cards they had to nerf the earlygame of the archtype alittle (just like corona).

No one ia going to revert it back man, it was ghe right choice for development.

Creep got support outside of rotation, but who is actually playing painful pluck or tormentor? maybe munch sees a little play, but the support they got really isn’t all that impactful.

i guess you’re right, but think of the future (if there is one ) giving more creep based staples will be easy when you know you can build on a slower more controlish gameplay.

For sure, but wasn’t obliterate already a slow controlish game plan? Sphere wasn’t just an aggro card before, it was part of a slow control game plan.

There was one mediocre source of creep generation in Mythron, thats hardly so much that a card like SoD needs to be nerfed into this state. If people are really that scared of 1 mana SoD making a comeback then it could at least be changed so that you can place it on unoccupied tiles again.

i didn’t say the nerf was justified (again same as corona).
but i get where they are coming from

The balance nerf would be 1 mana “Create a shadow creep anywhere but not under the enemy general. Draw a card”. No combo with tormentor but usable.

Old Sphere of Darkness was so good it was a staple in every Abyss deck whether it ran creep or not. I agree the nerf was overdone but I’m not sure we really need it back.

Sphere needed one of the nerfs not both, going to 1 mana is fine if it still only could target enemy minions, alternatively it’s also likely fine as a 2 mana card targeting anywhere. It’s definitely not okay with just a straight revert though.

A card being staple isn’t a reason to nerf it, especially not this hard. For 2 mana It should at least be able to target unoccupied tiles.

It probably comes down to the original intent of Sphere, was it meant to be a card specifically for creep decks or was it supposed to be an auto include in every deck? If it is supposed to be a “Creep only card” than as you suggest allowing it to target any space except for the enemy’s General would suffice. If we want it to be an auto-include in every deck than we will need to buff it much more than that. Either way Sphere got nerfed too hard.

My opinion is opposite…if a card is so good that it is a stapble it needs to be nerfed
CP balances based on factions…not on individual cards.Thats why every faction has broken cards like holy immo and makantor
I wish that they would aim to make all cards equal,not all factions

I think it could’ve just gotten the Songhai treatment; make the card draw occur at the end of the turn to prevent immediate cycling synergy.
