New Player. Suggestions?

Hello Duelyst Community!

I am excited to have found this game as I am a huge fan of TCGs. I have played Magic, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Force of Will and am happy to transition into an online CCG community. I am still very new and being new any help or suggestions would appreciated.

My first question is what general would suit my playstyle of White Weenie/RedWhite Weenie rushdown. That was what I played a majority of during my Magic days.

Thanks everyone!

Welcome to Duelyst!

First advice for you, check out the meme thread, we post a lot of random fun stuff there and generally have a good time.

If you want to swarm the board, go with lilithe. She can resummon dead minions, and power things up when they die.

Kara swarm might be fun once you get more cards.

Also: nice name

Thank you for the prompt reply!! I will look into this information you just gave me!

I’ve not played any card games prior to finding duelyst, but if you’re a newer player to the game I’d recommend picking up either lyonar or magmar, as they have solid cheap removal and minions. However, if you want to go for a specific playstyle, I’ll list what each faction can do:
Lyonar is the most basic faction, relying on stat-sticks and in general having easy to understand cards and not too much variation in terms of (viable) archetypes.
Songhai is the combo-centered hand dropping OTK faction, with poor removal but high damage potential and a huge amount of different archetypes to play.
Magmar is the aggresive faction, with cards that allow you to completely ignore board presence and go face, often overpowering your opponents and forcing them to be defensive and not play threats.
Abbysian is pretty much divided into two main archetypes (I’m sorry for saying archetypes so much); creep and swarm. Creep is generally a slower control deck, with revenant and obliterate in the late game they’re designed to last as long as possible (They are stupidly expensive though) Swarm is pretty much what you’d expect, with cards that benefit from having lots of minions on board, and basically winning the game depending on whether your opponent has a good AOE card or not.
Vetruvian (my personal favourite faction) has trouble dealing with backline minions but has fantastic value minions and very varied archetypes, again split in two with the different generals, with zirix focusing on building a board or playing aggressive/swarm tactics with golems. Sajj is a very different playstyle, practically playing one… robot? army, with insane damage potential from your general, generally playing control or combo decks.
Vanar has a insane amount of removal, and arguably the only true ramp in the game, and as of the most recent patch also has good draw (which was previously their main drawback, they’re insanely powerful as of the current meta) and can play a lot of different archetypes (please, I have no clue what else to use) though right now it’s basically just arcanysts on the ladder.

Phew, that was longer than I expected. I reccomend checking out some of the streams on twitch, watching people play is a good way to learn this game, and people are happy to help with any questions  Also, if you want help with decks I can build you some budget lists for each faction.

Edit: I just posted this; that is the longest thing I’ve actually ever done on this forum.

Also, I agree with spirri. Starting with Magmar or Lyonar might be a better idea, as Lilithe swarm can be costly to use better cards.

I don’t think our forum as a fully made “Tips for Beginners” thread yet; surprised. Here are SOME tips though to get you started in the right direction:

Fast deck building

-(IDK anything about magic, but) boil down your playstyle to 2 factions you like playing the most, a “primary” and “secondary”
-Try to work towards building decks to these 2 factions. This can be done by disenchanting other faction cards and enchanting CORE cards for your factions (our forums DO have suggested core cards, shoutout at @whyb0t). WARNING: Prismatics (shiny purple cards) are always safe disenchants (DE’s), since you can recraft the same card or others at equal value. DE’ing nonprismatic higher rarity cards can be a mistake though. For this reason, I ALWAYS recommend new players to ask vets about which cards are ok to DE and which would be suggested not to.
-Try to get a more consistent deck by avoiding only having “1 of” cards. (Try to always have at least 2 copies of any card you put into a deck.)

This stuff leads into crafting, a core part into quickly improving your card libary.

Crafting

-Crafting core neutrals over core factions will allow more flexibility early on in your playing. I suggest this for common and rare (white & blue circle’d cards).
-On the flip side, due to the spirit refund system of DE’ing, I recommend trying to buy higher rarity core cards over multiple lower ones WHEN POSSIBLE.

ex: You like Vet, but only have 900 spirit with no legendary (orange) rarities. I personally would recommend 2 Star’s Fury (purple) over 9 rare cards (blue). You COULD craft 1 legendary, but it won’t be consistent enough. If you have 1800 saved up though, yea, i’d recommend 2 legendaries.

This is all opinion and subjective. However, this method balances maximizing your spirit while getting good/immediate use out of it. The only argument I’d provide against this is in the VERY beginning where you may want a lot of immediate core rare cards to get a good foundation of a certain deck archetype (like Abyssian’s Lilithe Swarm with cards like Bloodmoon Priestess, BMP, and Shadowdancer)

Gameplay

-Removing minions at the cost of some general health is oftentimes worth it, specifically in the beginning. Leaving minions up, especially against Songhai (red faction) and Lilithe swarming may often end up punishing you for it.
-Learn about core enemy/faction cards that are screwing you ASAP. Had a plan that just got absolutely shut down? It MAY be a core/oftenused faction card. Notice the mana cost and effect of this card and stick it into your memory bank. This will help a lot to playing around it into the future.
-Hand size matters. Did they just burst out a ton of minions and everything seems hopeless and unfair? What’s their remaining hand size? They may have just used up everything they had; if you can weather the storm, you may still be able to turn the game around. Likewise, pace your own hand to the situation.
-Bloodborn Spells (BBS) come up every 2 turns, regardless if used or not. Learn to utilize this fact. P1 (left side) gets at every even mana, P2 gets at every odd mana. There’s a lot to say here, so I won’t go too in depth here. 1 suggestion I will say though will be to try and treat it as an extra card though; if you can use it as an alternative to using an actual card, this will assist in your hand size (Kaleos BBS vs. Mist Dragon Seal is a great example).

Tempo Lyonar is the deck for you.

Working on that. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Going to link this into F.A.Q. construction thread.

play mechs!!!

Swarm lilithe Is good, it’s actually reasonably cheap to start off with, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a cheap swarm deck got to diamond or even S rank. I’ve been getting to S rank for the past few months with her
