Idea for Obelysk Rework

I recently started playing Duelyst about a month ago and I was instantly drawn to the Vetruvian faction. I love control style decks and being able out value your opponents with dervishs from Exhuming Sand and Obelysks appealed to me. However, I find that the Obelysks are rather weak and don’t do a very good job of controlling an area and zoning the opponent. In my mind, I’m building an empire on the board from the ground up with an Obelysk deck and with sufficient time Vetruvian Imperium is the most powerful empire.

                                    Changes
  1. Wind Dervishs cannot exist when not adjacent to an Obelysk. This severely limits the range of an Obelysk.

  2. The Ephemeral keyword would be changed to mean a minion cannot exist when not adjacent to an Obelysk. Wind Dervishs would also no longer disappear at the end of the owner’s turn which means (assuming no Wind Dervishs have died) an Ethereal Obelysk would be able to host 8 Wind Dervishs after 8 turns. Since no other card or token shares this keyword is wouldn’t affect anything other than Wind Dervishs.

  3. Wind Dervishs have Flying/no movemevent restrictions within the range of an Obelysk. This allows movement of up to 4 tiles, corner to corner of it’s host Obelysk. However a Wind Dervish can survive if you have another Obelysk nearby that it can move to. It would take 6 Obelysks perfectly spaced across the board to essentially give your Wind Dervishs Flying. However your Obelysks must be close enough together to allow them to stay adjacent to an Obelysk at all times or it dies.

  4. I also want to nerf the Wind Dervish’s health to 1 as compensation for increase in mobility.

This is by no means a completely thought out and well balanced idea and I’d love to hear what everybody thinks. Thanks for reading! <3

this seems like a fun archetype idea on its own tho. maybe call them something like, Garrison or smth.

i do suggest you look at exhuming sand. I think that’s the kind of “Obelisks” which are close to what you want.

Oops, I did forget about Star’s Fury rip. I did mention Exhuming Sand though and that’s definitely not similar to what I wrote about. You missed some other points if you have any thoughts on those. :slight_smile:

I wasn’t really sure what you’re going for with the mechanic is all.

have you seen Khannum Kha tho? it’s a dervish minion capitalizes on existing dervishes on the field and has no movement restriction. Maybe that’s closer to your idea.

I dunno, I like the current Obelysks and their limitations are actually skill-based: How you place it, what order, how you spawn dervishes

Khanuum-Kha does have that similar aspect. I guess what I’m going for is rather than a single card giving you that freedom, you use multiple Obelysks to gain power over an area on the map and link then to give your Wind Dervishs more movement. Your general, hopefully, is safe in the back while the enemy has to fight through your Obelysks.

While I think obelysks are nice as they are, I really like your approach of designing their mechanics.

Obelysks are definitely difficult to place and use effectively but what I think a skillful player is doing is reducing the odds of useless spawns and attempting to stop the enemy from backing off. Right now Obelysks will always suffer from RNG.

I think the better option is to give Wind Dervishes Ephermal as long as they aren’t adjacent to an Obelysk. This way you have a minor buff that encourages to hold an area, but at the same time still is weak to removal.

Your approach shows that you aren’t thinking about removal on the obelysks at all. It is too easy to wipe out a community of wind dervishes with just one Lure, Hailstone Prison etc.

in order to not suffer from obelysk rng you have to be nice to your dervishes, you can’t expect the world from them if you do nothing in return :wink:

I like the idea of Wind Dervishs having current Ephemeral only when not near Obelysks.

And of course your opponent would attempt to remove your board. Like you said, it would be detrimental if to they took out a single part of your chain, if your attempting to have maximum movement that is. This would promote keeping Obelysks clustered together. I think I mispoke because I intended Obelysks to be more defensive despite the possibilty of giving large movement.

If this is wiping out a whole community, I guess plasma storms destroy entire civilizations :stuck_out_tongue:

I have an idea for Vet spell.

6 mana. Circle of defecation.

Summon a poop dervish onto each spot nearby your general.

Let those community wipers suffer. Synergises with Kha-Ka.

9 mana Circle of Defenestration.
Transform all Obelysks you control into 5/1 Flying/Frenzy Glass Shard Devirshes.
