Duelyst Forums

Cloudfrog's forum project

[UPDATED:discussion text]
I’m getting a discourse website up.
right now it’s being hosted here: http://35.184.22.50/
EDIT: it’s here now. http://35.186.190.165/ I rebooted it.
until i figure out how to put it here dooly.nonmeta.com
I’m still figuring out how things work, but i’ll let you all know as soon as it is 100% working!

Clarification: This is just a pet project of mine. This won’t be a dooly refugee site. I can’t promise you that I can sustain it, and more importantly, there’s a place we can move to now! that being @deathsadvocate’s https://projectcardboard.freeforums.net/ check that out too

it’s a treehouse because i can’t guarantee that it’s not gonna fall apart is it is lmao. but it’s still gonna be fun tho lmao

disclaimer: I dont wanna raise hopes. I’m just desperately clinging on rn. I just want to keep trying to the very end.

it’s 2am here. the coffee has worn off. I’m playing around with webdev so i can brag about it on my resume.
i’m one button click away from creating a dooly lifeboat.

What do I mean by that?
I went for the google cloud trial, and as it turns out

making our own forums is a few clicks away. Discourse is the app that the forums is using.
google gives you 300 dollars worth of free credit before it starts charging you(not automatically), so i can keep up the service running for a while.
It’ll deploy into a link like this https://project-a-268802.appspot.com/
though we could get a proper domain name for it. (albeit with a monthly fee)

some thoughts and additional :

  • i’m not really ready to part with all 300 of my credits. i mean, i do wanna host my app and just put the forums on one part of the website. If i did host it, it might not
(maybe we could just move the server from one cloud account to another every 12 months?)
  • there’ still the problem of the mail server, that being i dont have any. From what I’ve read, discourse requires it.
  • there’s probably more problems i haven’t accounted for, like actually managing the forums.

3 am. starting to think “screw it, maybe we should just hobo ourselves into the faeria forums.”

I hate Faeria after it betrayed its people and I would be glad to run contests for a dead game on the forums for a near-dead “living” game.

You can host a forum for far cheaper than $25/month. $5/year for a domain name + $5/month for hosting should be enough.
My concern, however, is migrating the content people would like to have access to after this forum shuts down.
Edit: Discourse is not the only forum engine, there are plenty of free ones with similar or even better functionality (e.g. PHPBB, modules for Joomla & Wordpress). Personally, I’m not a fan of it.

I already have this up and running for our project! I really hope the whole community comes and hangs out in our general section!

Thanks for all the replies! lol reading back some of the stuff i wrote last night, some of them turned gibberish. sry about that

oof, what’d they do? :open_mouth:

i tried scaling down the hosting vCPU back and it matches the 5 dollar hosting:

I guess forums will need more than 10GB worth of space tho lol

they don’t charge too much for space though, so i guess I can just scale it up whenever.
**(leaving myself a note here to double check if the specs are enough)

yeah :frowning: I haven’t thought of anything that can be done about that. the’re the “download all” button but it just downloads the text.

Ah, that’s alright! Thankfully, discourse is open source

I am, but i guess that’s only because i haven’t checked out the alternatives you offered lol. I’ll check them out

That’s amazing my dude! I really really wanted this. the weight has lifted off my shoulders.
I’ll still make these forums for fun though
Good luck with the coming launch/release!
