Can we have monthly cards back?

Premise for the “junior” players: there was a fantastic time back then when Duelyst used to have monthly cards. Each month a new common, rare, epic and legendary card used to be added to the core set and rewarded at the end of season. This was fantastic to keep the game fresh, balance stuff without nerfs and distinguish the game from competitors. At some point, monthly cards stopped coming because the core set was becoming too big.

Now that we have set rotations it could be an excellent time to put monthly cards in the game, it’s enough to collect them in a separate set and rotate them out just like normal cards. If this extends the card pool too much, just rotate these cards every year.

Do you think this is feasible? Would you like it? Do you see any downside to this proposal?

They would probably be neutrals. That’s the only downside I see atm.

It requires extra art, card creation process, testing, be careful to balance …
… on the other hand, as we speak of things that could reappear … sorry for hijacking the thread, but enabling back Frostfire Mode would require next to no effort :smiley:

Well, we used to have something like this, so it doesn’t seem impossible to achieve, right?

This also applies to Frostfire, though it’s understandable that CPG doesn’t want to split the game in two queues. They only know the numbers to say whether a permanent friendly mode would hurt the game. I don’t necessarily agree with this, just pointing out

Monthly cards: Nay.
Monthly emotes: Maybe.
Monthly skins: Yay.
Monthly keys(rare or above): Hell yeah!

i used to make posts like these back then the devs main excuse is it limits future design (makes life harder for them when making expansion) i guess its just too much work. But from a players standpoint all we wanted was something to make the game feel fresh… yes the expansion is nice and all but after 2 months tops there will be a decline in interest. What monthly cards offer was a purpose for playing the game and keep players coming back without even noticing it takes another 4 months or so for expansion hypuuu!!!

I heard about monthly cards but I never knew they were rewarded for free! Maybe we can have then a few times a year, as a surprise even or something of the sort.

Yeah, I’ll be honest; more or less right in my experience.
I remember the taunt week they had, then Bonereaper was introduced; that pumped some more of my time into Duelyst, enjoying that card.

I think that a monthly brand new card would not be doable, as CPG is already trying to make the card pool smaller, somehow, with the rotation, and it’s lot of work to design one, see if it can fit in the game, etc… But some kind of a special monthly thing related to cosmetics (skins but even battlefields and card backs) or other things like keys and gauntlet tickets would be nice.
Or what about a monthly quest? That could also be nice, with a price as valuable as the result achieved (number of victories, damage dealt, and so on…).

I could see this working if cpg took some of the neutrals they design for each expansion and spread them out across a few months. Or if they used monthly cards as a way to do reprints. Or some combination of the 2.

While we’re on the subject of reminessing about past features,can we have bi-weekly balance patches back? Those were great and totally achievable, since they did it in the past.

If I’m not mistaken, monthly cards were done away with because they were redirecting their design efforts into doing full sets more frequently. They’ve been sticking to their promise, so I don’t see an issue here.

Furthermore, we run into another issue. If CPG were to make monthly cards again, where would they go? Now that we have set rotations to worry about, would the cards go into the most recent set? Or would they go into the core set? If we put them into the core set, it may get too inflated and create balance problems.

I don’t have the answers, but I don’t see a need for monthly cards anymore. Other monthly rewards would be totes cool, though.

Also, @kevin2hard and @atheistmantis we already have monthly keys given for completing 15 quests each month.

Oh right, I actually forgot about them… But yeah some kind of monthly juicier reward would be nice, like keys for cooler crates, for example.
