Meta Talk with kevin2hard

From personal experience, I found it pretty easy to beat and only ever lost to it when testing different decks from the ones I usually use.

You came after it had died.

Ascension sajj was shit unless you played a deck with no ping. Even then, kaleos was really popular up top at the time, and it preyed on such decks

Sajj could easily play through ping, I have a replay of me getting EMP’d 3 times and I still won as Sajj, Sajj just rellyed too heavily on oppening correctly.

Zendo shut her down hard, lad, and he was very common up top. Starhorn often just killed her irrespective of trial, as he outraced regardless. Even with a neurolink start, it was pretty easy to beat her so long as you positioned properly

Those where only applicable if they didn’t oppened Neuro + Lark + Artifact from experience, Zendo costed too much and Sajj played away from Starhorn’s reach so him comboing you lategame rarely mattered.

If you didn’t oppen those it could often be another scenario.

Someone here got S1 with her. Nuff said. It was @phoinexflame, I believe.

S1 is a great acheivement and I’m not taking that away, but (1) that was early season/ early expansion (S + upper diamond was very much akin to what you see in late season gold due to testing), and (2) S1 - especially early season S1 - is almost always more of a function of your skills as a player and less due to the quality of your deck. There have been tons of meme decks which manage to streak to S1 in past seasons. Impressive, but by no means a comprehensive indicator of deck power. Ascension pre-nerf was t2 at best, and I stand by that statement.

Also, I believe it was eternalseraph, not phoenix.

What I meant by my initial comment is that in early meta crappy decks can get amazing results, which contradicts

Not quickly.

That sounds insanely cool. I’ll definitely check it out some day.

Indeed I reached S-1 playing with solely acsenssion Sajj. It happened at end of season however, not the beginning although you are correct that it was early in the expansion. Here you can read my initial thoughts on the deck although I now disagree with a good deal of what I said then. The reasons I was so impressed with it were because:

  1. I never achieved such a winrate before and was never so high in S before, especially at the end of season.

  2. Unlike what you would expect, at that time I actually had a possitive winrate against midrange Kaleos and (the prototype of) aggro Vet, both of which should’ve theoretically been my hardest matchups.

  3. I decimated Strategos who according to Kolos was supposed to be “the deck” in the upcoming meta.

  4. I defeated several Grandmasters with the deck despite being a subpar player.

Now I realise all of those reasons were moot and mostly do to the expansion not setting in yet. Once everybody went back to playing their regular decks Ascension Sajj’s winrate plummeted. This is particularly notable after Aggro Zirix became popular.
