Wouldn’t it be cool if elevated tiles were put in duelyst? I have no earthly idea how it would work, but I imagine it’d give it much more depth. Feel free to tell me below why it could never work. Edit: I only brought it up because I was trying to get a friend to play by saying it was like FFT, and he said that FFT paid much more attention to positioning and terrain. Maybe just put something like it in a solo-adventure, much like how hearthstone does it.
Integrate Elevation
also, I would totally pay $20 for a single player Duelyst adventure.
Reminds me when someone asked for Invisibility : hide your cursor from your opponent (so he can’t guess) and summon a minion that only you can see and that will only appear after his first attack
Back to topic : displaying 3D on an already crowded 2D board might be tricky, for instance when you have to target/display a minion located behind an elevated tile or minion sprites overlapping.
Remember how Final Fantasy Tactics handled it? You could swivel the board to see it from all angles. But I admit this would be hard on a seemingly static, drawn board that you’re always viewing from a 45 degree angle. Also, invisibility doesn’t sound so far-fetched to me. Sounds like a Songhai thing.
Also, if you go to duelyst.com , the fist thing you see is a rendition of a swiveling board, which is kinda hilarious because you never see it in-game
They don’t even have time to fix the current 2D UI so …
Elevation is great for large single player maps such as those in FFT. Map asymmetry makes fighting the same bunch of mooks interesting. That’s because each band of mooks would use different strategies to fight you, and you’ll have to fight accordingly. Being smart with elevation increases your odds in FFT’s RNG. These kinds of maps might be a bad idea when you want a symmetric, fair, fight like in Duelyst. Duelyst might have RNG as well, but to a lesser degree, and the numbers are often exact.
We do have examples where symmetric elevation exists: we have DOTA and Advanced Wars. They do nothing but create one way mirrors through the Fog of War though.
ah, that one’s a trailer-only thing. if you rummage the game files, you’ll find that the arenas are just 2D image files.
@nwardezir what’s wrong with the current 2D UI though?
oh wow reading this gave me that “you can’t lick your elbows” feeling all over again. Kinda sad that it’s been a year and all of these still apply.
And when I buildt it, a year ago, it was because several issues where piling up for some time
interesting idea
i think ill put that idea in the campaign thread that ive been putting together
Your thread (which I love) definitely came to mind
Oh wow! I never even noticed some of these things. Most of them seem like easy fixes for quality of life.
Considering CPG logic and resource management, Elevation on board may come before having Previous/Next on match Playback
that breaks my heart
