Duelyst Forums

I tried to show Duelyst to a friend

I played like 10 matches and his impression is that it’s a somewhat less deadly version of Russian Roulette. Playing more matches seems unlikely to help, but I said I’d send him a link to a thread where more experienced players could explain what I can’t.

Help?

Go for a night out in the woods where no one else is, sneak up behind them, knock them out, take them to a warehouse in the middle of nowhere, and force them to play the game until they LOVE IT .

Ok, but seriously why does it matter? If they want to play inferior trash like Earthstone, let them, it ain’t gonna harm you.

Legality: 10/10

But if you really want to induct your friend:

I think Mogwai has some beginner guides on his tube channel/budget deck guides

And of course: The Duelyst General Meme Thread

Also if they join the forums PLEASE make them call themselves @CPG!

You could always get them to watch a streamer. One of the proffesional ones that explains their moves to newbs

Has your friend played card games before? This one has less RNG than the others, and certainly not enough to radically control every match.

The F.A.Q. construction thread @johnbob78 linked can sorta help, but it is just a temporary place for players to help formulate and create a proper resource for new players/forum users.

And…if you can get some input as to some questions your friend would like answers to and share them in that aforementioned thread, that would be awesome.

My friend thought phalanxar was OP. Then he found true strike. Then he thought that was OP

He doesn’t like how songhai can backstab. He says that’s OP.

TLDR: He’s stupid

Has he found Vanar yet?

I should probably give more info

I faced ~3 Vaaths who got one or two General attacks off on me and did the rest with Rush minions + Thumping Wave. I faced a Starhorn who ramped out a Juggernaut on his second turn (2 flash reincarnations+1 mana tile). I faced a Lillith who did 19 face damage over 2 turns while sitting in the opposite corner (Dark Seed(6), Dark Seed(4), 2x Void Pulse(3), FlameBlood Warlock). I faced at least one Faie who used some sort of removal on everything that I played then spammed Meltdown. I faced a Kara that summoned 4 illusions and 4 Gravity wells in one turn–I said that was normal but since only one card in my deck would make that not instant death, it didn’t help. There was also a Songhai match that I don’t really remember.

I was walking him through what I was doing but he pointed out that despite accounting for everything I could, I kept getting wrecked by things I could not see coming. There were a handful of games where I did something pretty great to get out of a bind in good shape then died to something out of hand that invalidated the whole thing.

A stream could help if it wasn’t doing things like the above. Any recommendations? He’s in town through Friday so I have some time.

@johnbob78 It’s important because I have a burning desire to justify my decisions to my friends. Also, if I can’t refute the claims, it calls into question what I’m doing playing the game.

I get so happy with mentions to my post!
You just made my day better <3

Sounds like the deck doesn’t have removal nor pressure

I was impressed the first time i saw the 2/5 backstab (4) flying songhai minion.

Now i don’t even remember how it’s called,
Was it “scarlet viper”?

It really depends on what your friend enjoy doing in games.

If you know what style likes to play your friend he will find easier to enjoy the game, for example:
I like buffing minions and draw intensive decks,
While i don’t enjoy playing spell based decks and such.

It could help to know what he plays in other games and see what he likes.

Looks makes a lot.
(I found that my friend despite not playing are often interested about abyssian and songhai cuz “ninja best job in the world”)

Please just don’t put textwalls in front of him.

I know he doesn’t play Hearthstone or any other card game that I know of. He plays Warframe a lot–mostly Nyx, Trinity and Rhino if you’re familiar with it. In Atlas Reactor, he plays Aurora, Su Ren, Lockwood, Titus that I recall. He’s also into Fire Emblem, various fighting games and, of course, SSB.

Quick!
make him try magmar or the aoe centered lyonar decks/healyonar.

They are all decks who put the enemy in a tight spot, have a lot of cards which can’t really be played around and are instinctive to use.

Let him know he can change the sprites btw, it’s always good to know

Sort of just Magmar stuff. Hopefully you have some threats, big or far away ones, to waste some Thumping waves so they have less burst.

Dark Seed is usually a bad card. For 4 mana you can summon a minion which can do as much or more damage. Void Pulse only does 2 damage . Flameblood Warlock is a double edge weapon that hurts the opponent as well. Just curious but why are you running away? That’s a lot of cards with little threat on board.

What deck are you using?
All card games contain elements of RNG. Deckbuilding is of course where you can influence your own RNG.

Maybe try watching your own replays as well. See if you could spot what you could have done better. Any card you wish you had in your deck. See if you can explain your choice of moves. Practising explaining to yourself would help when explaining to your friend.

I think decks like that are what he doesn’t want. That’s basically what I was facing that drew his initial criticism.

That said, how does one change sprites? I didn’t know this was possible :<[quote=“humancalc, post:15, topic:9284”]

Sometimes I got a threat out and it absorbed one Thumping Wave, other times I was always on the defensive and the game only lasted a few turns (when they got really good hands, I assume).

In the Abyssian game, I wasn’t running away–she was. I had over a dozen squares of Creep down and had just summoned Variax. I had a Juggernaut making it’s way towards her and had cleared her entire board of minions. I didn’t chase because there was no need to put my general in danger–an extra 2 damage meant nothing to me, but I was trying to be wary of any tricks she had up her sleeve.

As for cards I wish I had in my deck–basically, the one’s that he complains about. Part of that is lack of spirit, the other is that I don’t find it very fun to play burn decks. What I’m trying to show is that burn decks aren’t all that exist…and Vanar doesn’t count.

lol you haven’t seen turn 1 triple flash jugg? yay, get to remove that and kill 6 eggs using 3 mana xD

thats easy, theres a secret that can wipe any board. its labeled “concede”

that doesn’t actually wipe the board, just removes buffs.

That’s an odd way to spell “Circle of Desiccation”. :stuck_out_tongue:
