CPG should choose what Duelyst is going to be

You should know that I’m not looking for anything, but the health of the game. This is a constructive criticism attempt, I don’t have any reason to bash the game but for the mistakes of the developers.

Back to your point, you make it sound easy, while it is not at all. First, if CPG had a legitimate doubt that Standard was not going to work, they should have tested the queues and said this clearly - something like “don’t disenchant your cards, because rotation might not happen”. Second, are you sure that Unlimited was preferred over Standard because it had more cards?

Other possible reasons are that people don’t like the current meta decks or don’t enjoy the competitive environment of the ladder. Now all the players will be put back together, so people like those above won’t be able to enjoy the game anymore.

Rotation was a serious thing and it was handled in a way which is not serious at all. I don’t think this is acceptable, given that this game is well established - this is not a beta or anything like that.

I’m pretty sure rotation was brought back, since in the past month or two, I’ve read at least five posts on the forums by players who’ve been playing duelyst for a while saying that that the meta is really dull, and leaving. Even forum frequenters have done this, a bunch, and I would assume those guys love duelyst since many still lurk on the forums. A whole ton of players reciprocate the full meta sentiment as well. And it certainly is, since wanderer, and brome are basically what you see all the time, alongside burn starhorn, nose sajj, and aggro zirix. Even I feel the meta is boring right now. I’m not sure, but I feel that this was sort of a stall move to bring back players, so that they can play around with new memedecks, and new cards, till the next large expansion hits. Who knows, rotation may even come back by then.

minor quip but there’s really not much value in doing faction quests? it’s 5g per game, and that’s as much as you’d earn playing a deck that actually wins, and you’d be playing the game instead of just going through the motions. I never really understood this argument for unranked. It’s not even good for experimenting and crafting a good deck since unranked is not a proper stress test. While I do appreciate having a “for fun” queue, i don’t think it serves anything beyond that purpose. (sorry this kind of feels almost offtopic, but it’s something to discuss)

Duelyst is out here making cost cutting staffing moves and huge low population measures. And you are wondering if Duelyst is trying to be major CCG.I don’t feel arguing I will just say none of the past stuff mean anything right now. They made a major move to hopefully stabilize duelyst and hopefully they have an active plan to raise the population at some point to a healthier level.

Just wanted to point out, they did test splitting the queues. That’s literally what Frostfire mode was, a test run to see if the game’s playerbase could handle it. And they obviously thought it could based on the data they gathered from that, somehow.

Just speculation, but I’m guessing they underestimated the impact of adding rotation on top of that, and that ended up being the deciding factor that skewed things out of control. Ranked is supposed to be the meat of the game, and if the majority of players abandoned it they obviously realized something had gone horribly wrong.

Regardless of the reason, rolling back a major change like this was honestly probably an agonizing decision for CPG to make. I have no doubt we’re seeing the results of many hours of debate. It’s not something they would have done lightly. It’s the kind of decision a company only makes if they realize the consequences of not doing it are incredibly dire.

This isn’t the act of someone going “lol oops we changed our mind”, it’s the act of a company going “We realize now that we seriously screwed up, and now our entire game is in danger unless we do something drastic.”

That.
Fuckin’exactly, that.

well sure, but you’ve got to win as much for that to happen. Oh, and deck testing is not possible without losing your ranked ladder status now. And for spirit poor people, it’s most definitely worth it. I need as much gold as I can get to craft more, and that means more gold. So I do need it.

@tsevech, I want to give a link supporting my assumption that recent state of Unlimited wasn’t finalised from the very beginning and was more like an experiment:

Duelyst Patch 1.95 - Trials of Mythron!

I see that the answer here doesn’t assume the removal of Unlimited mode, but the fact that CPG was kinda testing is obvious.

I Think lots of things were good, but i agree that they are lost, because the rotation rhing was a burst and they had to step back with something that was largely unpopular.

They tested things like the unranked with the “frostfire mode” and was cool. Yes theres no need to ladder X unlimited no more. But there was always a demand for unranked and casual games. To test new decks, fulfill quests and play without that pressure and competitiviness of gold and ahead with psycho apex decks.

About the card design i liked most of nerfs and buffs, Shinzar, Thunder Horn, Emp, Notion of starlesse eternity, Lost in the desert, mana deathgrip. frigid corona those were all well know problems to be adressed .
But to much shakes on the meta are annoying as players invest big time and resources in building a deck and sudenly vanishes and the meta changed.

To me this meta is yet to be defined, because they did nerfd vanar consecutivelly ( like happen to lyonar years ago), but now maybe Magmar e Songhai have the most unchanged abusive things ( althoug they slaughtered katara before bring it back).

I mentioned the cards for simple reason. They need to decide wich direction take the game as said. If its a card game were the board is an extra or a board game, in wich case its suppose to be slower and more focused on bulid up. To me what i hate about it today is an obssession with tempo/speed. you goatta play aggro an “cant be answered” cards because everithing is removed too fast. And the fast removal is necessary to answer overpoered cards typed “answer or die” like excelsius or nosh-rak. Curiously those very cards became useless because they’re always answered or played around so the meta is all about what can’t be answered or is hard to play around like shinzar’horn or Zendo.

This make decks a freak race of aggro and removal and that reduces the game options with lots of fun things becaming unplayable because they’re not fast or reliable enough (battle pets, variax, and in the Emp meta arcanysts).

In a board game teams have minions with way lower damage and higher life so they stay in the boar longer and the tatical part is enfasized, but obviously there are no minions or spells thet win the game instantly so theres no need for desperate fast removal. But its no longer a direction to be taken. Its a TCC, aimed to be competitive and became not fun or to competitive is probably its destiny. But they really have not figured out how to market it because they dont know how to please their fanbase and pursuit a new one at the same time.

It is going to be like major card games with this competitive aggro/removal psycosis and search for super combos and everybody playing the same decks ( wich in fact limits the options making roughly half the colletions unplayable even for fun). Or they reshape lots of the abusive cards to make the game slower.
For both scenarios make a unranked game seems to work better because it makes possible to play lots of things in a less competitive apex scenario.
Other option would be enable a ELO system, were you can play decks with cost limit, wich is usually popular with new players and makes competitive but lesse reliable on budget and creates a scenario with lesser advantages to veteran players.

Just to observe on posts i read before. They may have been screwd up again by making this misjudgement. Not that peaple were playing morr unlimited. People were playing more unranked.
At least now its easy to solve because create a secondary format other than gauntlet souf not be so complicated.

For the current enviroment on the ladder, every online game has toxic players, not alow conversation and only emojis helps with that, and still there are douches who find ways to be assholes, guys who when have lethal wait till time expire expecting you to quit , guys who try to show they have overkill . I dont think theres much more to be done about that, but an unranked game may be lighter for players with casual intentions wich lets face it, are the majority. I almoust consider a punishiment reach diamond, because the more competitive the game the less fun and even stressfull. It sucks only lose, but by winning minimally you is foreced into the table with the chads, that can be very annoying.

Something I’ve seen people suggest and agree with is that they should simply add an option to play unranked with the same queue for ranked. So, if you picked unranked you wouldn’t gain or lose chevrons for a win/loss but if your opponent picked ranked they still would. They could even make it so that people who picked unranked would have preferential matching with others that picked unranked, over those with equal rank etc. Then you could still have the unlimited experience, but with a fallback on the queue waiting time if the desired matching wasn’t available.

I’m honestly very happy with Duelyst as a whole and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite games of all times after having played for only a few months.

With that said, if this is a thread for caveats and honest feedback, there are factions that have access to many different viable and strong deck archetypes because of all their tools (Magmar is the prime example, but Lyonar and Abyssian are also extremely versatile) whereas some other factions have 1 or 2 broken-tier decks that are so strong they kinda remove the fun from the game (Vanar, Vetruvian and Songhai each have at least 1 type of deck like this) but then if you try anything else, it falls flat on its face.

I’m a Vanar fanboy and I see that this has probably been brought up already by someone because Mythron gave Ilena lots of new tools to play around with Stun for example, and that is definitely a step in the right direction… all I’m saying is that we need more of that, a lot more of that actually, so that all 6 factions have room for creativity and originality at the time of creating a successful competitive list.

unranked is like a set of training wheels man. i’d rather have some little cuts and bruises and learn fast instead of trying to learn how to prop myself up with a bike that supports itself.

like i said, unranked is not a proper stress test. you get an entirely different rogue gallery when you entered unranked: creep decks, meme decks, basic, decks, and people only running half-constructed meta decks. and if you do actually meet an enemy that does run something popular like they’d be missing core cards like so:

  • NoSE sajj with no siphon energy or sil-tracer
  • Wanderer decks that doesn’t have the proper tech cards or control cards
So sure you can construct a deck that beats those, but you’d be ill-prepared when those core cards appear.

that’s me and i need more religion in my life :joy:
joking aside, you’re either referring to people like me: who knows the game enough to find budget alternatives to missing cards, or you’re referring to newbies who don’t. if you identify with the former, you’d do just fine in ranked. if you identify with the latter, you’d get bodied by diamond players left and right in unranked( something that wouldn’t have happened if you stayed in ranked).

And hey, now that there’s no unranked queue, the ranked queue is going to be so much easier to climb.

Given that I havn’t felt the effect of queue length, I guess I can’t really say much. Can’t say I agree with you, though I do agree that I probably just lost that argument :stuck_out_tongue: . Don’t want to derail this thread talking about unlimited since I believe @atheistmantis had a huge discussion bout that in the other thread, you know the one. He probably said what I do want to say, but couldn’t say.

Its not a probjam that unranked its not a stress test, not everybody wants to compete or care about it, some just wanna play casual.

Thats what im saying dr bruce. I agree that casual is for the sake of casual fun. But as for the argument that this hurts anyone’s rank, i wont be having any of it.

what changed??? bro megamogwai left was the biggest change in duelyst history

MegaMogwai is back.
