Ancient Bonds Day 5 Lyonar: Gold Vitriol

Does seem a bit OP. Songhai vs Lyonar will be even more impossible.

Wait a minute, with this, I can calculate approximately how much one mana in Duelyst is worth!

So Golden Vitriol is gold sulphate. I’ll assume that it is AuSO4, instead of Au2(SO4)3, since it is more common. It appears to be filling approximately half a test-tube. Gold sulphate has very low solubility, so if the tube is at room temperature, it is most likely a solid powder, which seems to agree with the sprite.

A standard test tube has a volume of aproximately 10mL, so the volume of AuSO4 is 5mL. The density is 5.51g/mL, so it’s mass is 27.55g. Convert that to moles using the molar mass 293.03g/mol and we get 0.094mol of AuSO4. We can use this to find the mass of gold by multiplying by mile ratio (1:1) and the molar mass of gold (196.97g/mol) and we get 18.52g of gold. We can use the price of gold per gram (about 39.7 USD/g) to determine the cost of the gold in the test tube, which is about $735.20. We divide by two since this costs 2 mana and we get that one mana in Duelyst is worth about $370 USD.

I  you so much for that. Yay math and science!

seems quite broken in ziran. only 2 mana can be chained with bunch of heals to clear full board.
ziran was on the stronger side before, now she might be just op. combined with regalia this would be very hard to remove. can also be used to deal face damage bursts, something lyonar should not have especially healnar.

The word random and fact it is artifact stops it from being to scary. If this was a Abyss artifact I would be terrified but for Ziran this pretty good.I don’t think this well fit in the standard builds but will create its own burn style with Vitrol and lucent beam, and couple of other tools for aggro.

Im loving this expansion.

I seriously dislike the card. It is an example of bad use of randomness. The statistical spread between hitting an enemy minion and killing it (potentially something like a 3/2 ranged) and hitting the enemy general for 2 dmg (which might be inconsequential) is just too big, especially in the early game in a game where the early game snowballs so easily into a large lead. Bad design, just like Knive Juggler was in HS. Hope this never sees play.

I think this will be ok as long as trinity oath gets nerfed prior to expansion release. It’s scary, but it actually looks fair.

%90 (-10 For SigFigs)

Should have been written as about 400 as you only have one significant figure, and you’re estimating your volume.

I’m a biology major, making up uncertainties is my specialty :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Anyway, even if I was to use one SigDig, it would be 4*10^2 instead of 400.

P.s. Why do you call them SigFigs? SigFigs make me think of Figs, which are essentially mummified wasps surrounded by fleshy coffins.

Pi? More like 3.

I guess I’m the odd one out with my impression of this card. I personally don’t think it’s very good. It’s a case of “just because it has synergy, doesn’t means it’s good.” Think White Widow.

I’ll update this post later with my thoughts, I have limited time right now.

Edit: Update has been made in a post below (since it was made in part as a response).

Emerald Rejuvenator is finally going to become meta again. This, Sunforge Lancer, and Sunriser get double procs off and I am suprised that nobody is playing the card.

Honestly I doubt this will see play. It is a combo card that does nothing on its own. And for it -a combo card that does nothing on its own- to see play it must:

  1. have a reliable effect when comboed
  2. Cause a huge swing or outright win when the combo goes off

A good comparison to this card is Aurora’s Tears.
Like it, it is a combo card that does nothing by itself.

However Tears can win a game outright if the combo with it goes off AND it has a reliable effect i.e. you know what you are going to get.

This being an artifact instead of a spell does mean it has the potential to remain on the battlefield past the first turn. Here lies another problem:
Artifacts only reliably stick unto the battlefield in a low resource environment i.e. when both players are low on cards.

This being an artifact that requires other cards for it to generate any value means it has a good chance of being dead weight in such a scenario (due to lacking cards in hand to enable the artifact).

"What about Zir’an and healing a minion that stuck last turn with her bbs?"
That requires a card (the minion) and if you are going to be able to heal it with her bbs in a low resource scenario then you properly are going to win anyway…

So as an artifact Gold Vitriol fairs very poorly, staff is better in a low resource scenario. Also Gold Vitriol is unreliable as a combo piece (during combos whether it being an artifact or spell is irrelevant).

TL:DR Staff is a better combo piece AND artifact.

Its hard to imagine this card not being good except for when the meta is too fast for the card. In a meta where its fast this card won’t see play but in a slow meta it should be everywhere.

I don’t see it as an early game card but more of a mid to late game card where you have this along with trinity oath or a minion with healing effects or in combination with the BBS to heal a minion. So you can be certain to get at least some value off of it.

As a side note Grincher goes up in value for Abyssian because of the chance to combo this with Kelaino, but it depends how many artifacts get released with this set. Since before this set there are already 24 artifacts.

I don’t like this card. Considering how many times Zir’an can heal in one turn, the low cost of this artifact and the fact that Lyonar already is the best faction at conserving artifacts via Regalia and Dawn’s Eye I think this card is on the overpowered side.

This is AGAIN people freaking out about a not particularly good card because it’s shiny and new. Calls to nerf this are absolutely ridiculous…

The difference between this and white widow is

1

widow has a body that can be dispeled or otherwise removed the turn after its played by any number of cards while this is an artifact that requires 3 seperate sources of damage to break, giving it a greater ability to survive more than 1 turn

2

without an arthermaster support, white widow can only proc once a turn. With aether master it can proc up to 4 times. Heal triggers are a lot easier to proc and there is no upper limit take kelaino for example (Even as an enemy). One of these and a few scintilla on the board can give you a lot of damage. It Unexpectedly may even bring purgatos back to the ladder.

Tldr; this card is leagues above white widow. Its way easier to get lots of procs off even if it does get removed the next turn.

Lol, I’m getting called out, it would seem.

It’s clear that a comparison can be drawn between Gold Vitriol and White Widow since they share the “deal 2 damage to a random enemy” feature. Where they differ is in card type, mana cost and faction loyalty. Now before I get into this aspect any further, I want to make a little disclaimer: Yes, I really like White Widow, but not because she’s good. I like her art, animations, and I do like her effect. Despite this, I acknowledge she is really bad.

Gold Vitriol, I do consider more powerful. It’s cheaper and will activate more times in an average lifespan than White Widow would. My major problem with this card is how it is counter intuitive to Lyonar’s preferred play style.

When you play Lyonar, you’re wanting to bully your opponent. Your minions are your biggest asset and Zeal is commonly used in all Lyonar decks. This makes you want to put your general up front with them and force yourself on your opponent as much as possible. Gold Vitriol makes you want to play cat and mouse with your opponent, dropping minions to block your opponent while you run away to keep your artifact alive.

It’s probably plain to see from my previously stated opinions, but what I consider one of the greatest weaknesses of artifacts is simply how easy they are to remove. There are a lot of decks that feature a significant amount of out of hand damage (all Songhai, Faie, most Magmar, some Lyonar and Vetruvian). As I stated before, Lyonar is best when pushing your opponent as much as possible with your high value minions, but this puts your artifact in danger. Sure, you can equip Regalia or Dawn’s Eye to improve your chances at keeping Vitriol for a few extra turns, but I do not believe this is optimal (In Healyonar, you aren’t aiming to prevent damage to yourself as it is easy to heal yourself for extra procs, and Dawn’s Eye has no synergy and is rather expensive). The more you run away, the more breathing room you give your opponent to play at a more optimal pace and your creating less opportunities to heal yourself for healing procs.

Otherwise, and the most blatant problem with this card is the randomness (which White Widow suffers from as well). If the card specifically dealt damage to your opponent or to their minions, I feel it would be marginally better. that might just be my opinion. Also, let it be said that (although I do not believe anyone has requested this), I do not think it would be healthy to make a card like this select a target every time it activates. The order of events may become confusing and the activation would be wonky no matter how it is implemented.

Anyhow, I still expect to find some players running Gold Vitriol, but I expect that high level Healyonar decks will ignore it. For now, it’s a great way to help players create a basic Healyonar deck, since it’s only a rare and still has synergy and effectiveness within the archetype. I believe that this card is not strong enough to make any reliable impact beyond Gold level play.

Lastly, I want to make a little mention here while I can. I do not believe every card needs to be good enough to see top level play. All card games like these will have players at different tiers of ability and card access. It’s okay for one card to be completely out performed by another, provided the lesser card is made more accessible. It grants players with less budget the ability to play use a card that may benefit them while they await a chance at getting the better one. These should be done in moderation of course, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing if and when it happens!
